LOT DETAILS

Materials:

oil on canvas

Size Notes:

Antwerp circa 1644 - in or after 1701 Brussels

Edition:

The large canvas is lined and stable on its stretcher. The paint surface is in good overall condition, with many of the details and the vibrant colors well preserved. Some passages of good impasto still remain in spots. A fine pattern of craquelure is visible, though not distracting. Some thinness is visible in the darker tones, particularly along the left edge. There are a few tiny isolated and stable spots of loss in the lower register, in the chicken and the turkey. A vertical restored thin repair is visible in the lower right background, as another thin restored repair in the background to the upper right of the head of the turkey. Inspection under UV reveals a somewhat milky varnish that is uneven in some areas along the left foliage. Some brushy strokes of retouching scattered in the sky, with a more concentrated area near the center, below the branch. Other scattered retouches here and there in the background, largely concentrated near the edges. The painting can be hung in its present condition, and it is offered in a decoratively carved giltwood and painted frame.
